French cuisine

I am watching a TV show called 100 % Mag, magazine d’actualité, that I usually put on when I get home, just to make some noise you know. And they always have a small part of the show dedicated to food - I mean, otherwise it wouldn’t be France. Today they were presenting snails, frogs and horse… and recipes to go with.

Even though it wasn’t very appetizing, it made me laugh since I remembered a hike from two weeks ago. We planned a little, pieceful Sunday hike with one of my colleagues who said she would come with maybe a few friends and then her niece who is four years old.

Finally we wer seven - or six and a half as they counted us at a café afterwards… and we had such a good time! The little was so bubbly and full of energy and spontaneous that she made us laugh about every five minutes - and she LOVED animals. Like everything from the smallest bugs to the angry bull and one random camel we saw.

The funny thing is that she, as a real little Frenchie (despite her Polish ancestry), found almost everything edible. Like, how many little Finns would want to gather snails to be eaten at home the same evening…? She also tried (and almost managed) to catch an errant hen so that we could grill and eat her :S

Such a funny little girl :)

Sick leave

Jes!

Weekly report

Before this blog dies completely…! I’m not very much into sitting by my computer at the moment so I try and not to everytime I possibly can - these moments include pretty much sleeping, biking to work and taking a shower.

So not much is going on in my life, except for dreaming about holidays (almost there!)… And then there is the Post It at the office.

Thursday I went to the parking lot behind our office to get my bike and realized, looking up, that there indeed is some post it -art on the windows of our building. I was taking a picture (which should, eventually, end up in this blog…) when two young men appeared out of nowhere.

The guys: Do you work at spartoo?
I: Yeah… (???)
They: You have to start to participate to the post it -war! Otherwise we’ll never win. Look.

And yes, as I looked more carefully, in the buildings on the other side of the parking lot, all windows were filled with post it-art. Impressive. They have made pretty much all the Nintendo Super Mario characters and then there is Homer Simpson and Pikachu… It was pretty cool. But the guys were very serious and I don’t really see why. I mean if you don’t have anything to do at the office (it’s holiday season and last week was near dead), why not amuse yourself to do these pictures but it’s not that important :SSS

Yesterday me and another girl, from the French call centre, decided to strike back. I was dying out of boredom at my desk so it was the perfect distraction. We tried to make a shoe (freestyle, I guess the others use some kind of ready templates because otherwise they must be real artists…). Our shoe turned out pretty bad but at least we tried and amused ourselves :) And offered amusement to the other offices, there were more than one head at many of their windows looking at our direction.

Today I’ve worked worked worked. One of my least favorite jobs so far - I’m doing a documentary on serial killers and it’s repulsive… My head aches from sitting by the screen all day and the air is hea-vy, warm on the edge of a thunderstorm. On the positive note I had the time to go to the market earlier and I bought a bunch of delicious fruit, some chickpeas which just ended up into a delicious warm salad with some honeydew melon, avocado, raisins and some other stuff. Mums :)

Okay, back to the fascinating world of serial killers, then.

I’ll try to post the photos tomorrow or then next week after my deadlines!

Lauantai + sanoja

1. vieraat kielet
Vieraat kielet on kiehtonut mua ihan älyttömästi pienestä asti.

Koti-ikävä on aika jatkuva olotila ulkomailla.

Comment to this post, and I will list five things I associate with you. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your LJ (or just add a reply back at me). Other people (including me~) can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

Still alive

It’s been a little quiet here at the blog lately. Sorry for that :/

Nothing exciting has happened really, that’s why. I’ve been trying to deal with a little bit of too much work lately and was feeling pretty down. It’s NOT cool to not have any life outside work.

But I won’t bother you more with that :) I’ve had some good moments too!

This weekend I went to see my Maxime to Dôle. The weather was coldish and rainy so we didn’t do much, but it was still nice. Saturday morning he woke up at eight and went to buy croissants. I was at this point still feeling like a steamroller had hit me and went on sleeping. An hour later I got coffee in bed - or so I thought. I woke up to the lovely smell of fresh coffee, just to see him go back to the kitchen with the coffee pot the moment I finally stood up. It was just to get me up, apparently…!

We went to the marché just to laze around and ended up buying a bunch of food. Fresh fruit, tapenade de tomates confies, big pot of honey and fresh eggs. There are so many nice things there <3 I will have to show you pictures some day.

In the evening we took a tour on a second hand furniture store (Troc de l’Ile, if anyone is interested, exists in many other places in France and it definitely is worth a detour!). It was raining really hard outside and inside it felt like we went some decades back in time. It was quiet and calm and pleasantly gloomy in there. I spent a good while in the book department and bought a whole bunch of old, dusty paperbacks for just two euros :) Some of them had stood there so long they still had prices in francs in them…

In the evening it was time for dinner in a restaurant, according to our traditions. We hesitated between a very classy looking Japanese and a less fancy fish restaurant which we finally chose for economical reasons (…) and it turned out to be a very good choice. Value for the money and so on. I haven’t been feeling like eating salmon since, though. We had something called “Menu Viking” and were afraid at one point to have salmon even for dessert :D

I probably should get some work done now… Our administration site wasn’t working for a while, hence the blogging pause. But now, 13 minutes of efficient working time left before I have lunch with an Erasmus friend who just moved back to Grenoble two days ago.

Jag är så lycklig!

I’m sooo happy right now! Just had the nicest evening for a while and now I’m recovering from the cold (!!!) weather after a nice crab shower (as my sister would say - I’m not sure about my translation, though… rapusuihku, anyone?) in my bed, very drowsy but happy. Oh, did I mention that already?

Yesterday couldn’t have been any worse. I was feeling like crap all day for no apparent reason. Nothing worked and the customers were more stupid and annoying than usually and I wanted to go running but it rained like never before. When I got home I fell straight asleep and slept for almost an hour. Felt a bit better afterwards, though, but I was still wondering a little what the hell I am doing here. I should be home where my family and friends are and not here putting up with annoyed customers…

But then, miraculously today (or maybe last night while I had the most disturbing dream where I tried to make a difference between salt and sugar to someone who just couldn’t get it) my brain has worked out some very good ideas and solutions to things that yesterday seemed impossible and exhausting to even think about.

So this evening after work I started with my new plans. I went to see a gym that looked pretty promising on the internet. They offer a wide range of classes smany of which eem very interesting to me AND they have sauna and spa compartment <3 I just wanted to know how much it costs since they won’t put it on their website. Today the place was closed so I’ll have to go back next week. I really need to get my backside moving again because otherwise I’m tired and irritated all the time.

Also, I figured, I will be needing a social life outside work and independent from Maxime. So I did what I did last summer and joined a CouchSurfing meeting. C’était bieeeen! We had a picnic in park Paul Mistral and I met some very nice people :) Afterwards we were supposed to stay in the outdoors cinema in the park Paul Mistral but after about 45 minutes I had to give up and come home, that’s how cold it is at the moment (then again, having grown up in Finland, one week of “cold” - only +20 degrees - weather doesn’t depress me the same way the French people here).

I guess my great plans look pretty ridiculously simple written here but I was really stuck on my routine of going to work, sleeping and having some social life on weekends so it’s good to shake it up a little! I’m pretty sure I’ll be going to the meeting next Wednesday too :)

Bonne nuit, dormez bien!

14 juillet

Okay, I’m back on a much better mood - and some photos! Yay for me, the ultimate IT geek :D

Last Thursday was the French national day, le 14 juillet, and we had a day off from work. Wednesday we went to a bar in Grenoble with my Finnish collegue, Eveliina. It was just the two of us to start with and we had decided to have a glass of wine all civilised. But in the end we were almost ten persons around the table and even though I went home very civilised around 1.30am, E had stayed until 6am… She apparently missed out on most of the celebrations the next day.

We had made plans with another collegue to go hiking Thursday and even though the weather was pretty depressing in the morning (the French word grisaille describes it well - greyish, wettish and sad) I managed to talk my Frenchie into it. I guess it helped that I got out of bed at 8am to go buy some croissants to monsieur. He can’t resist ;)

We had rendez-vous at the parking of the 7 laux skiing center and all the way up (while not being preoccupied by the thought that I might throw up any minute - I really hate the mountain roads!) I hoped the sky would clear up with the wind. But no. We actually entered into the clouds when arriving… And stayed there all day long, wet and cold.

We walked almost literally into some horses. Pretty intimidating, especially the male who wanted to protect his herd…

Everything went well despite the conditions - until the friend to my colleague who came also with us started to worry about the direction we had taken. Without a map it was impossible to decide whether we were still on the right path. Then Maxime had the best idea ever… If we just followed the small stream that fell on the slope we would forcément arrive at the lake we were looking for. After half an hour of creeping up in the middle of the stream, breathless and soaked up to thighs we found ourselves in the middle of nothing. We had lost the stream and we were so far up that there were no more trees. And with the clouds (that remind mostly a very thick fog when you are inside them) we couldn’t see much where we were going. Such an adventure…

I was starting to get pretty anxious but then, luckily, Maxime happened to look in the right direction at the right moment during the few seconds when the clouds scattered a bit and saw some fences indicating that we were near the ski slopes. It too us a good half an hour to climb up the few hundred metres because the slope was very steep. I was hanging on to the few bushes and twigs that grew there and was so afraid of dying I didn’t actually even realize how physically hard it was.

My hiking company from Thursday. We managed to find a lake - not the one we looked for but who cares!

Finally we entered the ski slopes and from there on it was like “walking on a highway” as Maxime said. We even found a lake and though it was not the one we were looking for, the sight of it made us laugh, so relieved we were to be back on marked paths!

In the evening - after a hot shower and two hours of sleep - we went to watch the fireworks of the national day at one of Maxime’s friends’ place. He lives in the cité I’ve told you about, in the building where someone was killed last year during the riots of 14th of July. Great, as if I was looking for to be killed that day… But the apartment was on the 18th floor with a view over all the city and the valley and we saw at least three different firework shows! It was freezing cold though, I was wearing two sweaters and winter coat and was still cold :(

Joyeux 14 juillet :) Or whatever you are supposed to say…
Friday there were some more fireworks and an apéro at friends’ place in the small town of Rives a bit further away from Grenoble. It was really nice and for a change I actually new beforehand (most of) the people we were hanging out with. That’s good every now and then :) I’m feeling a bit homesick at the moment and sometimes I really feel I need to be with people to whom I don’t need to explain who I am and what I’m doing. If you know what I mean.

Saturday there was the wedding but I think I’ll tell you more about it later, it’s starting to get a giant entry here. Congrats to all those who made it all the way to the end :)
